Widow on the World was written when I decided to take the advice often given to authors to ‘write about what you know.’ Having been widowed twice in the space of seven years I felt pretty well qualified. Of course, I completely accept that each person’s experience of bereavement is going to be slightly different – however there are often similarities that we recognise in others and these were what I wanted to get across.
I didn’t want my novel to be either too sad or too depressing – so I started the story a year after the main character, Denise, has found herself alone. There comes a time in the lives of most of us who have lost a loved one when we are starting to accept what has happened and to realise that you cannot change what has happened only what happens next.
Picking herself up, brushing herself off, she has accepted that the time had come to get back out in the world and live her life. However, life and particularly her family seem to have other ideas…
