Roger Courtney
By Nigel Cawthorne
In 1940 Roger Courtney, an army officer, risked court-martial to demonstrate how valuable a naval Special Forces unit could be. A big-game hunter, gold prospector and canoeist, distinguished during the “monster fever”, Courtney was one of the most exotic figures of the Second World War. Though ridiculed, Courtney didn’t give up. He knew the only way to prove his idea could work was to put it into practice… and gave rise to the SBS.
