Balance of Fear

By Geoffrey Osborne

The world rests on a knife edge…

Amidst the deepest chills of the Cold War, the Director of MI5’s Special Security (Operations) Section is a worried man.

In his office, hidden in the depths of an innocuous-looking building in London, reports from his man in Leningrad, and others, are leading him to one, inescapable, conclusion….

The Americans are developing an anti-ballistic missile program. And the Russians are out to destroy it.

The Russians are planning to hijack an American ship, his man in Leningrad says. But he does not know which ship, or indeed any further details. The CIA does not want to know, and the implications for Britain are huge.

And now his man in Leningrad is dead.

Then, a US transport ship vanishes between Dover and Hamburg, and it seems that the Director’s worst fears are coming true. It is time to call in his best secret service operatives.

Between them, agents James Dingle and Glyn Jones must re-take the hijacked ship. Arriving by submarine, they soon discover that this will be one of their toughest challenges yet.

Gaining control of the ship and cargo means they must overcome not only a ruthless pirate crew, but also the Russian Destroyer that is protecting them – and it will take all of their wits, courage and ingenuity, as well as a good helping of brute force, to do so.

Balance of Fear is a fast-moving, adrenalin-fuelled story that will particularly appeal to fans of military themes and thrillers. Combining appealing characters with humour and plenty of action, it moves swiftly to a thrilling close.

Geoffrey Osborne is an author of suspense thrillers, including A Time for Vengeance, Death’s No Antidoteand Balance of Fear.
