Bay of Killers is the second instalment in Paul Sinclair’s gripping crime thriller series, ‘The Italian Connection’, and is set against the backdrop of Italy’s stunning Ligurian region – where the beautiful Bay of Poets turns into the sinister Bay of Killers…

Below, Paul shares a selection of his own poems inspired by the Bay of Poets.

From this window I sit and write
As dawn appears across the bay
The changing vista fills with light
Reminding me of that awful night
A love lost poet whose body lay
On stormy deck now washed up I pray
Or is he still ten fathoms deep?
Immortal muse his words resound
From watery grave to hallowed ground
Memories stirred for us to keep
His words of love in consciousness
To aid our struggle with life’s distress
We wake, we breathe, we soldier on
In search of hope and inspiration
To reach the end without duress
A peaceful place with friends immerse
To share with poets and philosophers.

Perceptions change as days pass by
And inner musings cloud the sky
Is it peace we seek from troubled mind
Free of feelings, yet senses aligned?
None can know in present time
The worth of searching self-sublime,
Where who we know is what we are
And what we think a constant murmur,
Hurtling round our brain, like crazy pinballs
Sensing purpose, yet crashing off the walls.
They say our inner ramblings confuse
Natural evolution and thus we lose
Identity, meaning and fortitude,
The loss of sense and aptitude.
Our lack of purpose plain to see
Polluting friends and family.
How can we escape life’s affliction
When life itself is a benediction?

It’s hard to leave this immortal place
That brings a smile upon the face
Knitting together furrowed brow
In smooth caress that does endow
The charm of such enchanted view.
Across sanguine waters calm and blue
It thrills, rejuvenates, like a lover’s kiss
Enriching life with new found bliss.
The haunting cry of gulls encircling
Meandering pathways, steep and winding,
Down to harbour’s edge and rocky wall.
Gazing forlornly up at church memorial
Knowing full well that on my return
Nothing will change, no need for concern,
The bells of San Georgio will welcome me home
Awakening forgetful souls from its lofty dome.
