Rome Unbound: Servus
By Christopher Lee Buckner
It has been over a century since Caesar first landed on Britain’s shores. Now Rome has conquered the savage land, but civil unrest still prevails…
Quintus Liberius Verus, a newly assigned centurion to the Ninth Legion, has been sent from Judea to take up a new post in Britain. He needs a new beginning. When Verus arrives, he realises the situation in Britain is unstable. The natives are still resentful of their captors – the embers of war are burning deep below the surface. Verus is a hero to the men of the Fourth Cohort after leading the recapture of Elginhaugh from the barbarian horde.
Verus, with his native lover, Bryher, at his side, faces the predictable backlash and the dark shadows of his own past that threaten to overwhelm him. Humanity, honour and freedom are all at stake in the epic battle for the control of Ancient Britain. Sometimes a man must go against the orders of his superiors. When it is discovered he has been supplying rations to the starving Britons, he is immediately cashiered.
Christoper Lee Buckner’s historical novel Rome Unbound: Servus finds the ‘disloyal’ Verus bound on a slave ship for the flesh markets of Gaul. He is at the mercy of slaves who hate Romans and slave traders alike. A life of toil in the marble quarries of North Africa beckons. His only hope – and a slender one at that – is that he might escape it as a gladiator if he can catch the eye. And all he really wants is to return to Britain to be with his Bryher.
It is the deadliest of situations. Can even a battle-hardened centurion survive?
Servus is the third in the Rome Unbound series, following on from Whispers of Rebellion (Book 1) and Dishonoured (Book 2).
