Another Tear Falls: A Study of Scott Walker

By Jeremy Reed

The Walker Brothers rose to fame in the mid-sixties, their success powered by the soaring, melancholy baritone of singer Scott. Discouraged by lack of progress in their native America and attracted by the pop scene in London, they had a string of hits in the UK with their emotional ballads, culminating in the epic No Regrets.

Scott Walker, however, proved averse to fame and the band broke up. Scott remained in England where he became a highly elusive, yet influential figure. In Another Tear Falls – the title of a Walker Brothers single – poet and biographer Jeremy Reed charts his progress, from reluctant chart-topping teen idol through to the heroic existentialism of his great solo achievement, the four albums Scott 1-4. Charting his enigmatic, reclusive career that allowed for no live performances after the 1970s, and a complete disappearance from the musical scene through the 1980s and 1990s, punctuated by only two albums, Climate of Hunter and Tilt, Reed writes with a poet’s insight into Walker’s highly complex psychology.

Championed by some of rock’s greatest poet lyricists – David Bowie, Mark Almond, Thom Yorke and Julian Cope – this compelling, stylish tribute affirms the singular brilliance of Scott Walker, one of the most gifted and original recording artists in the history of popular music.

Jeremy Reed is the author of over 40 award winning books of poetry, fiction and non-fiction. He has been awarded many prizes, including the Somerset Maugham Award and is a winner of the National Poetry Competition. He has been lauded by giants such as JG Ballard, Ted Hughes and Seamus Heaney. He is considered a legendary subculture icon and is a well-known performer of his work with the Ginger Light. He has written studies of Lou Reed, Scott Walker and Marc Almond, for whom he has written extensive lyrics.
