Work in Publishing Week: Lume Books

As part of the 2022 Work In Publishing Week campaign, the Lume team describes their work and shares advice to work in publishing.

Read below to find out more about each publishing department and the work it entails.

Eve Lynch: Marketing and Publishing Executive

Could you tell us a bit about yourself and your role?
I tend to be a bit of a hobby-hopper. In the past year alone, I’ve had intense passions for pottery, running, and gardening that have all swiftly died. One thing I’ll always make time for, however, is reading. At Lume Books, I am a Publishing and Marketing Executive.

What are some of the day to day tasks you do?
I plan and create Lume’s newsletter campaigns and the social content we put out on our Instagram. When we have a big frontlist title coming up, I also like to get involved with outreach and publicity: developing interest among influencers, authors, and publications that might help us spread the word. On the publishing side of things, I handle our eBook uploads and the production of our audiobooks. Day-to-day, this largely involves sending emails and keeping track of projects – until the time comes to share something with our readers.

What skills are required to perform your role?
I’m about to sound like every job advert ever, but good communication and organisational skills are essential. As the last link in a few of our publishing chains, it’s important I can be relied upon. I’ve also been working on my creative skills since I joined Lume (particularly in the art department) and have continued to work on my commercial awareness.

What’s the best career advice you were given?
Something that a lot of people have had to tell me is that many areas of expertise can be learned on the job. But they won’t be if you don’t accept challenges and throw yourself into tasks you haven’t done before. I would add, however, this absolutely doesn’t mean you can’t ask for advice and guidance (another thing I’ve had to be told to do).

What’s the best part of your job?
I’ve always been big on variety. I like to keep my to-do list varied so that I minimise the opportunity for boredom or burnout. When I get tired of emails, or my brain won’t focus on writing copy, I like having something completely different to turn to. But, of course, it’s pretty great that every task on my list involves books.

Tanuja Shelar: Marketing Manager

Could you tell us a bit about yourself and your role?
Hi! My name is Tanuja Shelar and I recently joined Lume Books as their Marketing Manager. My work is exciting! I get to champion and shout out about books of various genres, which involves a lot of designing, advertisements and analytics. I also dabble in publicity for our frontlist titles.

What are some of the day to day tasks you do?
My day-to-day tasks can vary but my main priority is planning, creating and implementing digital advertisements for our books. I also analyse our monthly sales and report to the Head of Publishing. You can find me creating designs for our adverts, planning social media content with Eve, or strategising with Aubrie for our upcoming titles.

What skills are required to perform your role?
An understanding of the market, familiarity of design tools like Photoshop, Indesign and Canva. I’d also recommend learning and keeping an eye on your competitors. It can be an informative benchmark. Constantly keeping the audience in mind. It’s so easy to get carried away with grand marketing ideas but if your audience is not going to see it, it’s a wasted effort. Analytics! Measuring your campaigns performance is vital and can help you improve your output in real time.

What’s the best career advice you were given?
Be shameless! Ask for you want, and the worst possibility is they are going to say no. You are always learning, improving and evolving. Keep that in mind and it will open more possibilities than ever.

What’s the best part of your job?
Working with incredible books and people! I love that I can try something new everyday. I’m really lucky to be able to experiment and push my creative boundaries with each book.

Imogen Buchanan: Design & Production Manager

Could you tell us a bit about yourself and your role?
I’m Imogen and I’m the Design and Production Manager for Lume Books. I design book covers and oversee print production. Luckily, my role lends itself well to my passions: art and books!

What are some of the day to day tasks you do?
I manage each book cover from conception to production, which involves picture research, creating concept visuals, designing covers, preparing files for print, costing print-runs, and working closely with the editorial and marketing teams to make sure each design is genre and audience appropriate.

What’s the best career advice you were given?
It’s okay not to know the answer to every question, but always show that you are willing to find out.

What’s the best part of your job?
Getting to see the full life cycle of each book, from manuscript to readers’ bookshelves!

Aubrie Artiano: Head Of Publishing

Could you tell us a bit about yourself and your role?
I’m Aubrie and I’m Lume’s Head of Publishing. My role entails acquisitions, working with authors and editors on manuscripts, and overseeing Lume’s publishing schedule. When I’m not reviewing manuscripts, I love being outdoors (weather permitting), experimenting in the kitchen, and writing.

What are some of the day to day tasks you do?
I oversee contracts, manage the publishing schedule, and liaise with editors and authors on manuscripts undergoing edits.

What skills are required to perform your role?
You must be detail oriented and have a comprehensive understanding of the commercial market.

What’s the best career advice you were given?
Be patient, and trust your gut.

What’s the best part of your job?
The opportunity to work with so many talented people.
