When I started the Sebastian Symes mysteries it was purely for my own enjoyment.
I have been a fan of the Sherlock Holmes books for many years and I realised if I wrote about a contemporary detective I could create my own adventures. I had great fun developing the characters of Sebastian Symes and Major Arbuthnot Ritson, and in solving the cases brought to them. I loved to escape from my day to day world of internet, mobile phones and 24 hour news, into Victorian Britain. Of course, while the first case was written for fun it was a great incentive to continue when Endeavour said that they would publish it. There is a fascination in every crime, in the suspects and in the changing locations; I have been able to visit so many beautiful parts of Britain and to see them as they were in Symes’ day. That the stories were enjoyed by so many readers has added to that pleasure.
I am delighted that Endeavour Media have made the first five cases available in one volume. I hope the readers get as much enjoyment from these as I did when writing them.
