War Baby
By Beryl Kingston
Thirty-year-old Roberta (Bobbie) Chadwick was adopted at birth in 1942.
As a child she was warned to be good, meek and mild, lest she ‘turn out like her real mother’. And now, as an adult, she is lacking in confidence, intimidated by her long-term lover – and haunted by her unknown origins.
When her adoptive father dies, she finds her adoption certificate and resolves to find her natural mother, her true identity and a greater sense of purpose. It is a quest that brings her close to others born during the war, explores the lasting effects of childhood experiences, evokes memories of World War II – and leads her to uncover an astonishing wartime secret . . .
Beryl Kingston was born and brought up in Tooting. After taking her degree at London University, she taught English and Drama at various London schools, as well as taking some time away from teaching to bring up her three children. She now lives in Sussex with her husband.
