The History of the Rebellion and the Civil Wars in England
The year is 1646. The first phase of the conflict that would become known as the English Civil War has just ended. King Charles I has been defeated for the first time in the series of wars that would ultimately lead to his execution. In response to powerful Parliamentarian propaganda, he asks his friend Edward Hyde, later Earl of Clarendon, to write a ‘true history’ of the rebellion. The result, which took 28 years to complete, has become a classic of historical writing.
