Suki’s Baby

By Beryl Kingston

‘Beryl Kingston understands how to weave dialogue, character, theme and a thumping love affair into unity’ – Sunday Times

Can a woman’s fate ever be hers to determine?

The year is 1755 when the wealthy Bradbury family take a house in the spa town of Bath for the season. Lady Hermione Bradbury has recently given birth to a long-awaited son, who is being suckled by wet nurse Suki Brown.

Suki’s own son, Jack, the result of a springtime romance with one Captain Jack, is a thriving, happy baby, in stark contrast to the Bradbury infant William, who dies suddenly. On impulse – and because she needs the work – Suki pretends that it is her Jack who has died. Consequently, she remains with the family whilst embarking on a year-long quest to find her handsome Captain.

Captain Jack, however, is not the loyal lover she remembers. After months of trying to track him down, truths of his past are revealed that leave Suki much less certain of her future than before.

Can Suki build the life for her and her baby she so yearns for? With all the tenderness and enthrallment she is celebrated for, Beryl Kingston weaves a tale of hardship and betrayal, love and ambition.
