O’Donnell and Tex Tyler had both been wrongly incarcerated and were serving their separate sentences splitting rock in a chain gang in Starr County.

It was back-breaking work. In pairs they slaved away each and every day, constantly aware that any slip of the hand could result in shattered bones, or even death.

But O’Donnell was always on the alert and as soon as a glimmer of an opportunity arose to overthrow their guard, he grabbed it.
