A River Running

By Millie Vigor

Medically discharged from the army, Garnet Plowman struggles to adjust to his life back home.

Returning to his childhood sweetheart, Dorrie, and their son Lucas, Garnet attempts to reintegrate back into the community. They even take in an evacuee, Jake, when his guardian returns to the dangerous territories. But Garnet cannot help feeling that Dorrie and the boys deserve more than a scarred man that cannot financially support them. Especially when he discovers that Dorrie is in line to inherit a great deal of money.

Feeling inadequate, Garnet keeps postponing their wedding plans, much to Dorrie’s frustration. Plagued with flashbacks, Garnet has a tendency to lose his temper easily and lash out. He feels that walking away is the best option to free Dorrie from a life of poverty.

So he does… in the middle of the night…

Can Garnet overcome the horrors that fill his mind and return to Dorrie? Can he regain the confidence he lost whilst serving his country? And will Dorrie ever forgive him for walking away?

A River Running By delves into the mind of a tortured war veteran and his struggle to return to the life he once knew.

Born in Dorset, educated at a village school, Millie Vigor says that her real education began when she left school and started work. As she went through life she took note of sights and sounds, how people reacted to one another, what made them tick and then, with the addition of her own experiences, she sat down and began to write. As well as articles and short stories she has written an autobiographical book, Kippers for Breakfast, as well as works of fiction: Catherine of Deepdale, No Skylarks Sing, Paying Davy Jones, The Winding Stair, and Sweet Sorrow. Millie lives in Somerset with a cat called Harriet.
